A pretty quiet one today, not a ton of new stuff going on. We brought a couple of cows back to the barn that are due to calve in a couple of weeks. It's always interesting to see the herd dynamics shift a little bit as everyone re-establishes where they are in the pecking order. We also have been feeding out new hay that we bought in last week. It's actually "haylage," which is a wet bale that has been wrapped up airtight and left to ferment for a bit, like silage. It smells so strongly when you open it up; very fruity and sharp and a little overwhelming first thing in the morning. But the cows love it, and pretty much gobble it up as quickly as I can feed it out. It's really great for them to have food that they love to eat, and milk production has even gone up a teeny bit, so it's helpful all around.
I also spent some time in the silo, pricing out some of the meat we got back from the butcher last week. It was some nice quiet time, although the kittens were making it practically impossible to get anything done. They are so accustomed to anyone coming into the silo being there expressly to visit them. They were climbing all over everything, my scale and the freezers, demanding to be petted. It was both adorable and slightly frustrating, but after a while they calmed down and I was able to get some work done. They're just so tiny and irresistable!
